As part of Perenco's Social Responsibility programme in Guatemala, a well planned forestation initiative has been carried out since 2001. The programme seeks to encourage forestation on communal lands, in order to recreate the natural resources that have been destroyed as a result of the expansion of agricultural lands.
This community project is developed between the communities, the local authorities and Perenco. Perenco is in charge of growing trees in nurseries, and providing specialised assessment to communities for moving the project forward. Trees are then distributed among communities for final planting. Besides the obvious benefits of the reforestation, communities also receive a financial incentive from the government for the work.
In 2008, two tree nurseries were established, and trees were donated to 15 communities. In Raxruha in October 2008 Perenco held a celebration for the 1 millionth tree donated to communities.
