Safe and efficient Work Over and drilling operations have enabled Perenco Guatemala to successfully increase recovery. This has been through activities such as, drilling vertical and horizontal wells, changing electro-submersible pump systems, reservoir stimulation, timely repairs and fishing operations. With limited equipment available in country, Perenco operates its own 550 hp workover rig and 1200 hp drilling rig.
Due to the low reservoir pressure, all production in the Xan Field is brought to the surface using electric submersible pumps (ESP). Currently, there are 34 ESPs ranging from 1,000 to 8,000 barrels per day. All of them produce around 125,000 barrels per day of oil and water. These complex artificial lift systems are installed at depths from 6,500 ft up to 7,500 ft.
There is also the facility on the Xan Field to test ESP motors and ensure they continue to comply with IEEE standards. The ESP design is conducted by Perenco engineers and in the last two years, even though the number of ESPs have increased, the number of failures has been reduced by almost 25%. The system has therefore been proven to be both more reliable and durable and to successfully reduce loss of production.
