In less than 48 hours Guatemala faced two major natural disasters. On 27th May, Guatemalans were surprised by the dark sand rain, a result of a massive eruption of the Pacaya Volcano. Several thousand people were evacuated from the surrounding areas and shelters were immediately opened to help the homeless communities. However, the situation worsened as "Agatha", the first hurricane of the Pacific region, entered the south of Guatemala devastating the southern part of the country.
Perenco was quick to offer help to CONRED (The National Emergency Organisation) by essential equipment including, food rations, blankets and water as well as shovels and plastic bags for the clean-up operations. The situation continues to be critical as the basic infrastructure of the country has been severely damaged.
